Have you ever felt the thrill of being completely immersed in the flow of creation—where time seems to pause, and the act of making feels like a dialogue with the divine? Whether it’s piecing together a quilt, writing a heartfelt story, painting a vivid canvas, or tending to a blooming garden, the creative process is one of the most profound ways we connect with our Higher Self. For me, this sacred act often mirrors my spiritual practice, where meditation and reflection reveal deeper layers of meaning in everything I create.
Lately, I’ve been meditating on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, specifically Book 3, Sutra 13, which explores the essence of all forms and their connection to the greater whole:
Through this process the aspects of every object are known, their characteristics (or form) their symbolic nature, and their specific use in time-conditions (stage of development) are known and realised (Light of the Soul: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Alice Bailey)
Lessons from Sutra 13: Understanding Creation
The teachings of Sutra 13 offer a framework for understanding the deeper nature of forms and their role in the greater whole. It describes three key aspects:
Characteristics of the Form. The first layer is the outward, tangible form of an object—its physical characteristics, texture, and material qualities. These reflect the object’s history and evolution, much like the fabrics in a quilt tell a story of their own. As creators, we start with these raw materials, using them as the foundation for something greater.
Symbolic Nature. Every object, whether a quilt, a poem, or even a tree, is a symbol of something deeper. This symbolic nature reflects the soul or divine essence hidden within. In Sutra 13, this is described as the unveiling of the higher self—the jewel hidden within the lotus (Om mani padme hum). When we look beyond the surface, we begin to see the light of the divine shining through.
Specific Use in Time-Conditions. Finally, there is the purpose or role the creation serves within the flow of time. By meditating on an object’s form, symbolic meaning, and purpose, we gain insight into its past, present, and future. This awareness helps us align with the greater plan of the universe and create with intention.
When we create with these principles in mind, our work becomes more than a task—it becomes a sacred act, connecting us to the eternal now.
Guided Meditation: Creating with the Higher Self
This guided meditation is designed to help you align your creative process with the Higher Self using the center of head technique for clarity and connection. Set aside 10-15 minutes for this practice.
Grounding in the Present. Sit comfortably with your back straight and your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. With each exhale, imagine releasing any tension or distractions. Feel the connection between your body and the earth, grounding yourself in the present moment.
Finding the Center of Your Head. Bring your awareness to the space in the center of your head, just behind your eyes and slightly above your ears. Imagine this space as a quiet, sacred room within you—your inner sanctuary. Allow yourself to settle here, feeling calm, focused, and centered.
Visualizing Your Creation. From this centered space, imagine holding a piece of your creative energy in your hands. It could be a swatch of fabric, a pen, a paintbrush, or even a seed. Observe its physical qualities—its texture, color, and weight. Let yourself explore its tangible form from this place of neutrality and clarity.
Discovering the Symbolic Nature. While staying in the center of your head, ask yourself: What does this object represent? Is it connected to your past, present, or future? Allow images, emotions, or intuitive impressions to arise naturally. Trust the insights that come from this centered perspective.
Aligning with Purpose. Now, visualize your creation in its completed form. See the quilt stitched together, the garden in full bloom, or the story written on the page. Notice how it impacts the world around it. Who does it touch? What ripples of love, healing, or inspiration does it send out? Stay in the center of your head as you observe this, keeping a sense of neutrality and awareness.
Returning to the Present Moment. Gently bring your attention back to your breath while remaining in the center of your head. With each inhale, feel gratitude for the gift of creation and connection. With each exhale, release any doubts or fears about your process. When you feel ready, open your eyes, carrying this sense of centered clarity into your day.
Journal Prompt: Connecting Creation with the Divine
After your meditation, take time to journal your reflections. Consider these prompts:
What did your creation reveal about your journey?
How does the symbolic nature of your work align with your spiritual growth?
How has the process of creating brought you closer to your Higher Self?
Closing Reflections
Today's meditation on Sutra 13 reminded me that every creation—whether a quilt, a garden, or a life lived with intention—is a sacred act. By understanding the layers of form, symbolism, and purpose, we align ourselves with the greater flow of the universe. As creators, we are also students, discovering ourselves anew with each stitch, word, or brushstroke.
May your creative process reflect the light of your soul, inspire those around you, and connect you to the divine essence within.
