The Essence of Sound
Sound is more than just vibrations traveling through the air—it is the heartbeat of life itself. From the harmonious resonance of a violin to the whisper of the wind, sound surrounds us, reminding us of the invisible forces that shape our world.
Even nature sings—crickets hum under moonlit skies, filling the air with their rhythmic call, and whales echo their songs through the depths of the ocean, their haunting melodies traveling vast distances. These sounds don’t simply exist; they create meaning and connection.
One of my favorite examples of sound’s magic is how it can physically shape the world. A violin bow drawn along the edge of a cymbal covered in sand produces stunning patterns—beautiful, intricate designs that mirror the order and balance of nature. Sound, I’ve learned, is not just something we hear; it’s something that moves through us, shaping our lives and our relationships.
Hearing Her Call
One quiet evening, after my mother had been hospitalized for cancer, I stood at the sink washing dishes. The rhythmic sound of water running and the clinking of plates filled the kitchen, grounding me in the moment.
Then, I heard it:"Jenny..."
The voice was unmistakable. My hands froze mid-motion. I turned, scanning the empty room, but no one was there. And yet, I could feel her presence—warm and unmistakable—standing behind me. When I turned again, I saw her silhouette, faint and shimmering, walking toward me. My heart stopped, caught in a moment of wonder.
We hadn’t spoken in a long time. Years of estrangement had created a distance between us, one I wasn’t sure we could ever bridge. But hearing her voice in that moment, so clear and so full of intention, changed something.
The next day, I worked up the courage to call her in the hospital. Her voice on the other end of the line was weak but steady. As we spoke, I hesitated, unsure how to bring up what I’d experienced. Finally, I said, “I heard you the other night. You called my name. It felt like you were standing right there with me.”
There was a pause, then she replied softly, “I remember calling out to you.” Her voice carried a mix of wonder and quiet certainty as though it was the most natural thing in the world.
That moment, even over the phone, marked the beginning of a shift between us. It wasn’t just about hearing her voice—it was about recognizing the connection that had always been there, even when life had pulled us apart.
A Spiritual Practice Unveiled
As my mother healed, life found its rhythm again, and our relationship deepened in unexpected ways. She grew curious about my work, asking more questions about what I did and why. When I first told her about my practice as a psychic medium, she paused, processing.
Finally, she laughed nervously and said, “You what?”
It was a mix of disbelief and humor, and I couldn’t help but laugh with her. But over time, her skepticism softened into curiosity.
One afternoon, she surprised me by asking, “Can you do a tarot reading for me?” I pulled out my cards and began, explaining each symbol and the story it told. She listened intently, her eyebrows knitting together with every revelation. “How do you know all this?” she asked, her voice tinged with wonder and a hint of unease.
“There are some things even a mother doesn’t tell her daughter,” she joked, and we both laughed. But the unspoken truth lingered: this spiritual practice was unlocking something deeper between us.
Healing Across Realms
When her cancer returned, everything changed. This time, the prognosis was terminal. She turned to me with a quiet strength, asking for help in ways she hadn’t before. “Can you send me energy healings every day?” she asked, her voice steady but hopeful.
Energy healing had become a cornerstone of my spiritual practice. It involved focusing my intention and working with my spiritual guides—my team—to clear the blocked and stagnant energy that often weighs us down. I’d send her healing light, imagining it enveloping her in warmth and love, dissolving the pain and fear that illness can bring.
After her passing on August 18, 2024, I continued this practice. I learned that healing doesn’t stop when someone dies. Our spirits continue their journey, shedding layers of karma and learning new lessons. Love and intention, I believe, are powerful forces that transcend physical boundaries.
This work reminds me of the film Astral City: A Spiritual Journey, which portrays the afterlife as a realm of growth and transformation. Like the characters in the film, my mother’s spirit felt close, her presence a reminder that our connection was unbroken.
The Sound of Spirit
These experiences remind me of a teaching from The Light of the Soul, Alice Bailey’s paraphrase of the ancient Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. In Book 3, Sutra 44, Bailey explains that sound is a bridge—a connection between the physical world, the spirit, and the unseen forces that shape our existence.
The sacred vibration of AUM, often described as the sound of the universe’s creation, exemplifies this concept. For me, AUM represents the thread that unites breath, soul, and body, weaving them together like strands of a tapestry.
But sound is universal, and its meaning transcends specific practices or traditions. Some may hear this connection in the quiet hum of nature—the rustle of leaves, the call of a bird, or the rhythm of ocean waves. Others might find it in a favorite hymn, a heartfelt prayer, or even the comforting beat of their own heart.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1)
Whether we call it the Word, AUM, or simply the hum of existence, sound grounds us in the present moment while opening us to something greater. Meditation and reflection have helped me hear this divine melody more clearly. In stillness, the sound reveals itself—not just as a vibration, but as a presence that connects us to the greater whole.
This universal melody doesn’t belong to any one tradition. It’s woven into the fabric of creation itself, reminding us that regardless of our paths, we are all part of the same great symphony.
A Universal Symphony
My mother’s journey taught me that healing, love, and connection are eternal. They stretch beyond the boundaries of time and space, carried in the vibrations of our intentions, prayers, and memories.
When we truly listen—to the sounds of the world, the whispers of our souls, and the echoes of those we’ve loved—we find the universal symphony that binds us all. My mother’s life and her passing taught me to hear that music more clearly, and I hope it inspires you to listen for it, too.
