Sound is instrumental. The production of sound is innate to all forms of life. From the cacophony of crickets chirping on a summer’s eve to whale songs deep in the ocean, the Earth is a noisy ruckus of melodies clamoring for attention.
Sound makes an impact. The waves produced by a violin bow moved along the side of a cymbal with a collection of sand on top creating intricate designs of nature, both elegant in form and mathematically beautiful. Sound can make a heart beat, an ear drum, and a mother instinctively soothe her crying baby.
My mother was in the hospital recovering from lung cancer surgery. She hadn’t told me about her illness. I heard of it from a family member after she was admitted to the hospital. On the evening of her recovery, I stood in my kitchen washing dishes - listening. I could hear her calling, "Jenny..." Yet, she was miles away.
In response to the sound of my mother's voice, I energetically sent her love and a prayer. I heard my name again and felt her presence behind me this time. When I turned to look, I saw her silhouette walking towards me. My heart stopped.
Days later, after my mother’s recovery, we spoke at length about what happened to her. When I reminded her of my experience, she said she remembered calling out to me.
