Silence

When I sit and contemplate…while receiving my mani/pedicure…life’s miracles come sharply into focus.

It was a bright autumn day in September. The school had barely opened for my children. My normal drive is 25 miles in one direction, then 25 miles back up to the top of my mountain, where the house is generally quiet and typically warmed by the woodstove. However, on this day, it was unseasonably warm.

Many afternoons, I returned from the silence of my home to pick up my children from school again. What my in-laws are still trying to figure out about me is what I’m doing with my time between dropping the kids off at school and picking them up again in the afternoon.

Spiritual reading began as a 30-minute a-day practice. I had my instructions. I knew what to do. Or, so I thought. My awakening was gradual, for the most part, as was my understanding of the reading material.

On one particular day, I sat contemplating with some books in front of me. My usual sources include Deepak Chopra, Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, and Neal Donald Walsch, to name a few familiar ones. Of course, any book or resource may be used for doing the work. It’s a matter of what’s beckoning for one’s attention. But, on this particular day, I’d gone deeper into my meditation and studied nothing besides Rudolph Steiner.

With Steiner’s work, one goes deeply to discover the essentials. As I read through the passages, I began having spiritual experiences.

It was a cold, stark room with many windows. Several feet ahead, at the front of the room, was an antique wooden teacher’s desk. Rudolph Steiner was sitting behind the desk, smiling at me and wearing a grey wool suit. In that instance, I pulled back from this experience as the door closed behind me. Before the door closed completely, I heard a man’s voice in a thick German accent, “I wasn’t ready for you yet.”

I experienced what I’ve come to understand, so far, as the 5th Kingdom or Angelic Kingdom, while still keeping my feet planted firmly on the ground. This experience gave Deepak’s words, “Reach for the stars while keeping your feet on the ground,” a new meaning.
