Three weeks after my due date, I returned to the MD’s office with my baby in my arms. “Between changing soiled diapers and breastfeeding, I’m overwhelmed! This is all so wet!” I cried to the doctor, bright red cheeks and a fever near 104F.
Mastitis is a painful breast infection caused by bacteria. It's often thought this problem is caused by a decrease in the flow of breastmilk, though plenty of milk is available. The MD said only antibiotics would cure the infection; however, soon, I became aware of my new body and learned to overcome Mastitis by nipping it at the slightest sign of infection – a warm compress, plenty of rest in bed, highly nutritious foods, plenty of fluids, and a satisfied baby with unlimited access to the breast (a secure latch-on), was what it took. Prevention was the best cure!
In the days that followed my intervention for Mastitis, I began awakening: How was I able to overcome on my own what the doctor was saying couldn’t be done without antibiotics?
As a member and leader of La Leche League International between 2000 and 2008, I became accustomed to what is known as ‘Mother’s Intuition.’ What many women experience through the trauma of childbirth and subsequent days growing accustomed to a new baby and body image can be considered a kind of spiritual awakening – an awakening to one’s inner knowing about Oneself, and sometimes despite common medical advice.
A dear friend and spiritual teacher shared with me the following message:
You don’t have to live in ignorance. Anything you want to know can be revealed to you. Then, you may become a pioneer in whatever field interests you. Don’t ever be afraid of what other people think.
