Mediumship Q's: What if My Loved One Spoke a Different Language?

One of the most common questions I get during mediumship readings is:
“What if my loved one spoke a different language? How do you understand them?”
It’s a great question, and the answer is both simple and profound. Spirit translates.
I remember a reading where a client’s relative on the Other Side primarily spoke German. As soon as their energy came through, I sensed the language barrier—but not in the way you might expect. There was no struggle to understand. Instead, the message arrived in a way I could process. Spirit ensured that I received the communication in a language I could interpret—most often, English.
Sometimes, it’s as if the message downloads directly into my awareness. Other times, it feels like playing an intuitive game of charades. If words don’t translate directly, spirit communicates through symbols, body language, emotions, and energetic impressions. It’s as if they bypass the need for spoken words and tap into a universal language of feeling and knowing.
This reminds me of Sutra 45, Book III of The Light of the Soul, Alice Bailey’s paraphrase of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which speaks of the unfolding of spiritual mastery. It describes how, through alignment with higher consciousness, the yogi attains siddhis—extraordinary abilities that transcend the physical world. Among them:
Prapti – The attainment of the objective. The ability to reach anything, anywhere. This is how spirit transcends time, space, and language to deliver messages of love.
Vasitva – The power to command. Not through force but through harmony with divine will. Spirit’s messages flow effortlessly when we surrender to their language.
Anima – The ability to become as small as an atom. This speaks to the way spirit can communicate in the most subtle, yet powerful ways—through a sensation, a fleeting thought, or an image that carries deep meaning.
These abilities, however mystical they may seem, are simply reflections of what is already present in the fabric of existence: a reality where connection is not limited by form. The language of spirit is the language of the universe—of energy, vibration, and intention.
No matter what language a soul spoke in life, their essence remains part of this vast, intelligent whole. Love transcends all barriers. I have never experienced a reading where the heart’s messages—expressions of love, forgiveness, encouragement, and wisdom—were lost due to language. The unfolding of a client’s spiritual path, the growth they are meant to embrace, and the guidance of their loved ones all find a way to be communicated.
This is one of the many ways spirit reminds us: communication is more than words. The bonds we share, the love we carry, and the connections between this world and the next are limitless.
In the end, whether through spoken language, intuition, dreams, synchronicity, or the quiet knowing that arrives unbidden—spirit always finds a way.
So if you ever wonder whether your loved one can reach you, even if they spoke another language—trust that they can. They are already speaking to you in the language of the heart, the language of the soul, the language of the universe itself.
