Inclusion Therapy

Sometimes, one forgets what is right under one’s nose.

The other day, I was listening to a public talk on separation. Now, this wasn’t our ordinary discussion. It was more or less a public school, discussing how, in direct and indirect ways, to bring together a community of learners from vastly different perspectives than the one the school system would have us all believing. I, for one, function as a parent and staff member at this school. That we were having this discussion blew my socks off - in an effective way.

Inclusion Specialist is my long-time best friend and confidant’s Teaching Credential. Cheri has been in public education for most of her adulthood. In a recent discussion, she spoke to me about accessibility. The new, universal paradigm is to create multiple learning pathways- not just the brick-and-mortar stuff – allowing lifelong learners to engage with the material in familiar ways without imposing limitations.

In another recent discussion, the tables flipped. A teacher and friend from work approached me with the following question: What is the pulse? How may I find out what brings families in here for enrichment activities and to volunteer? I went within Myself for the answer.

Are we here to serve or be served?

Limiting the self-expression of any person, regardless of background, moral standing, economics, educational status, or ignorance…, isn’t exactly the welcome mat for inclusion. A thorn had been placed in my side regarding the bureaucracy of one’s establishment.
