There was a time in my earlier esoteric training when the doctrine of the Ageless Wisdom enamored me as it had to do with the colors of the rainbow. Each color represented a personality type and its characteristics: the pros and cons. These were called the Seven Rays, and finding out one’s “ray type” was often the center of conversation in the meditation group.
‘I’m a 2, 4, 7,’ I announced to the group after receiving my Ray Chart in the mail, preceded by a questionnaire and a small fee. As we made comparisons, others in the group were enamored by their own Ray Chart.
Later, the ‘What’s your ray type?’ conversation hit the ceiling. Was it better to have some 7 rather than a 4 or a 3? Ones were willful and typically isolated, independent types, but with enough 2 were natural leaders. My Ray Chart was a little disappointing because it didn’t show a very predominant ray; rather, I was scattered all across the rays – was I okay?
As I transitioned from one meditation group to another higher ashram, the conversation about the rays was dropped. We no longer talked about the individual self, and a more inclusive understanding came through:
What you have here are limited modes of thinking based on the discovery of the personality, which is the automaton. What you want to do is get beyond that. What we see in manifestation is a small percentage of what is available to us. None of us want to limit ourselves by any definition. The Seven Rays are one model of reality; learn to recognize yourself in all of the ray characteristics, but don’t allow it to limit you.
