Burning Ground

Writer's picture: Jennifer LasellJennifer Lasell

The subjective life is inward. What is of one's internal nature is a value indefinable by human constructs, and yet, people attempt this very thing by remaining identified in the material. Simplify life. The simplification of all forms in nature termed qualia - material objects, circumstances, relationships, family ideals, or cultural constructs - unfolds the expression of the internal nature accordingly (You Are the Universe, Chopra & Kafatos).

My life simplified the moment I got over it—my home and hometown burned to the ground. All my possessions, as did the memories they held for me, went with it. As I sifted through my internal memory box while maintaining responsibility for everything I once owned, a realization cleansed me of the ashes. The memories are mine; the objects were projections of an inner light never meant to be contained to begin with.
