Belief

Spiritual, to me, means inclusive of all of God’s creations in Heaven and on Earth and beyond. The remainder is an empty vessel just waiting to be filled with God’s love and the life that created it. All matters are of God in essential nature, so no one is left out of the word: Spiritual.

Last Saturday, I sat down with my family over a nice, hot, home-cooked meal. We are now eating vegetarian dinners, so the typical spread is a bowl of curried lentils or tofu with a tossed salad on the side. My oldest son decided to address the whole family with his ideas, “You know, whether or not you believe something is immaterial to it actually existing. Existence itself is not dependent upon belief.” Of course, this dialogue led to a lengthy discussion and a tender-hearted, more heated debate about the nature of reality.

I disagreed with him, but as I was 3 to 1, outnumbered by the masculine energy in this household, I haven’t gotten into the discussion until now. In my estimation, belief is the very basis of experience. How we see ourselves in the world is how the world performs for us.

Of course, experience is how we know ourselves, so I won’t be convincing anyone in my family how I view the world. That is unless I conduct a little experiment. The problem is how to define belief in an evolving universe and then how to define oneself in relation to this process of evolution.
